A 31-year-old was not legally sentenced to life in prison in Bolzano on Saturday for allegedly killing both his parents more than a year ago and then throwing them into a river. The court also ruled that the man should spend a year in solitary confinement and that he was sane in both alleged murders – which allegedly happened in quick succession.
The dead man’s son had confessed to the crime, but the defense insisted the suspect was not sane due to his mental state. The prosecutor’s office, on the other hand, pleaded for life imprisonment with one year of solitary confinement because of the cold-bloodedness of the crime.
Expert: ‘Suspect is still dangerous today’
During the trial – in which more than 100 witnesses were heard – several expert opinions were presented that dealt with common sense. They came to completely different conclusions. The experts agreed that the suspect suffers from mental disorders and is still dangerous. This would also show incidents in prison. He tried to strangle a fellow prisoner in the cell.
On January 4, 2021, the suspect allegedly killed his parents, both teachers, in the family home and disposed of his bodies. The lifeless bodies were only found weeks later and after an extensive search in the riverbed of the Adige.
