A Scandinavian depression caused stormy and cool weather in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany last weekend. The first storm surge of the season occurred on the North Sea coast and on the Elbe. The fish market in Hamburg was flooded on Saturday afternoon. According to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the water in the Elbe rose to 1.82 meters above mean high tide around 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday night, a cold front with thunderstorms and sometimes strong gusts of wind passed through Schleswig-Holstein. A storm caused serious damage in Cashagen near Lübeck.
People were not harmed. Looking ahead to the coming days, it is already clear: according to the BSH water level forecast, no further storm surges are expected for the time being.
Even more special Drop in temperature
In Baden-Württemberg, people experienced a special drop in temperatures after recent record values. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the highest temperatures recorded in the second decade of October in Germany since weather records began in 1881 were 30.1 degrees in Rheinfelden and Müllheim on Friday.
Early on Sunday afternoon, only about eight degrees were measured at Stuttgart airport, while it was about 13 degrees at Karlsruhe. The DWD announced the first autumn frost on Monday evening.
