Due to damage to the St. Anna weir, water does not flow as usual from the Steyr to the Wehrgrabenkanal, a tributary of the river – which caused it to dry out further over the weekend. This has consequences for the fish, microbiology and the design of the facility. The fire brigade is now manually pumping water into the side arm.
“The fish were fished out by the fishing association,” fire chief Gerhard Praxmarer told the “Krone”. “To preserve the microbiology in the canal and the structure of the dam system, we pump water from the Steyr to the tributary.”
It pumps all night long
The Steyr volunteer fire brigade had twenty men on duty since Sunday. To ensure that the tributary of the river in Eisenstadt does not dry out completely, the Floriani will continue pumping throughout the night, Praxmarer announced on Sunday evening. Floriani’s work continues until the damage to the dam system is discovered and repaired – and the water then returns to its original path.
Damage to “Annawehr”
The damage was noticed on Saturday because the water level in the canal had dropped, reports “ORF OÖ”. Due to the damage to the so-called “Anna Weir”, which was actually supposed to provide the inflow, water no longer flows into the canal.
Fire chief Praxmarer speaks of an extraordinary operation, but one that is feasible.
