147,000 documents disappeared – Red Cross Salzburg combats data chaos

Date:

147,000 documents are still untraceable! The Red Cross has wasted the digital data of thousands of Salzburg residents. Information about vaccination appointments in the city of Salzburg and Flachgau is no longer available.

This simply cannot happen! Between February 2021 and March 2022, the Red Cross carried out and documented corona vaccinations in the state on behalf of the State of Salzburg. The needle was inserted approximately 300,000 times and a two-page documentation form was completed for each individual vaccination. However, the electronic data of the 147,000 sheets is currently only partially available.

Lost disk?
The originals of vaccination lines in the city of Salzburg and Flachgau and those of the vaccination bus have already been destroyed. “We currently do not know exactly how this could have happened,” Anton Holzer explained to the “Krone”. The state rescue commander suspects that an employee lost the data storage medium in question as a result of the sudden dismantling of the vaccination lines.

According to the Red Cross, a private individual got the ball rolling. She requested her personal information at the beginning of October. Only one scanned page could be sent, but the second was missing. “We have reported the matter to the data protection authority,” explains Holzer, who assumes that the private information did not end up with third parties.

Clarification required
The responsible State Councilor of Salzburg, Daniela Gutschi, is now demanding “light in the darkness” from the organization. “We let the Red Cross run the vaccination lines because of their expertise,” she emphasizes.

No consequences
There would be no consequences for the country. Will the country help find the data? “No, that is the responsibility of the Red Cross.” However, the country does bear responsibility for data protection. Gutschi will contact the Federal Data Protection Authority to learn more about next steps.
