“Bodies everywhere” – Hamas reports 500 dead in attack on hospital

Date:

An Israeli airstrike on a hospital complex in Gaza City has left at least 500 victims, according to the Health Ministry, which is run by the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas. While Palestinians speak of an Israeli attack, the Israeli army insists it was a misdirected Hamas rocket.

At least 500 people were killed in the attack, according to the health ministry of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. The site of the Ahli Arab Hospital in central Gaza was hit, Hamas said on Tuesday.

An eyewitness reported via Twitter: “The images from Gaza’s al-Ahli hospital tonight are horrific – corpses and body parts are scattered as far as the eye can see (…) blankets, pillows, children’s backpacks and food are everywhere – the scene of the Today’s airstrike provided refuge for 1,000 displaced people.”

The head of civil protection told broadcaster Al Jazeera that more than 300 had been killed. The information cannot be independently verified.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke of a “bloodbath in hospitals,” the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported. He ordered that flags be flown at half-mast for three days and that the ‘martyrs’ be remembered during this time.

Millions of people on the run
Nearly half of the Gaza Strip’s civilian population is now displaced, according to estimates by the UN Emergency Relief Office (OCHA). About a million people had left their homes on Monday evening. A third of people took refuge in buildings of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinians, the report said. Others camped outside or stayed with friends and family in the south of the area. Hospitals are “on the brink of collapse” due to a lack of electricity and fuel for generators.
