Witness made video – Illegal glue trap: Birds died a cruel death

Date:

A shocked witness made a terrible discovery in the industrial area near Hall-West in the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land. Birds were caught there with a sticky trap. The animal protection association for Tyrol has filed a complaint and warns against illegal purchases on the Internet.

The sight was heartbreaking: two great tits and a sparrow seemed to be glued to the 29 by 18 centimeter glue surface. At least one of the birds was still alive and tried again and again to free itself by flapping its wings – but in vain. The witness, who encountered the tragedy in the shopping area near Hall-West, first called the emergency service of the animal shelter.

She then took the coffin and the suffering animals to the Innsbruck-Mentlberg animal shelter. Insects and a lizard also fell into this trap. It is unclear whether it is hours earlier or even days. At the animal shelter, nature caretaker Christina Skupien took over the horror: “The sticky paste is actually intended for catching rats and mice, there is hardly any escape.”

Attempts at liberation are doomed to failure
With great caution, the animal shelter employees tried to free the feathered victims. “That was impossible. The entire body, wings and skin were as if covered in silicone. Birds are vulnerable and their skin tears easily,” the wildlife caretaker describes the hopeless situation. “I saw a lot, but I had to swallow several times.” As expected, the birds then had to be rescued by a veterinarian.

The animal protection association for Tyrol has now filed a complaint with the BH Innsbruck. The trap was set up in a publicly accessible place between several company buildings. Further details are currently unclear.

Isolated warnings, but still sold
The glue traps are sold by various companies and in some cases there is a warning about them on their homepages: “The use of glue surfaces is prohibited under the Animal Welfare Act. In special cases, permission from the veterinarian may be required.”

NOTE: The video is not for the faint of heart

Skupien urgently warns against the order, saying it is fatal for many species.
