The mood among employees in the metal processing companies in Vorarlberg is irritable. The reason is the low offer from employers in the wage and salary negotiations, which will continue on Friday.
There has hardly been a year in which metalworkers’ ideas about wage and salary increases have differed so widely. While the union wants 11.6 percent more wages, employers only offer 2.5 percent plus a one-off payment of 1,050 euros. Both parties have surprised with their demands: The union, because demand has been quite subdued given the ongoing inflation rate of 9.6 percent over the past twelve months. And the employers, because they have made an offer that many see as a provocation, the mood in the companies is correspondingly heated.
