The President of the European Parliament has stressed that the ‘brutal murder’ of Mahsa Amini has activated a historic movement led by women. Amini died in police custody in 2022 after being detained by Iran’s vice squad for not wearing the veil ‘correctly’.
The European Parliament announced the delivery of the Sakharov Prize 2023freedom of conscience prize that the institution awards every year in recognition of the struggle for human rights to the Iranian Mahsa Amini and the movement “Woman, Life and Freedom” was created after her death.
“The brutal murder of Mahsa Amini It has become a crucial moment. Triggered a move led by women that is being historical. “The world has heard the cry ‘Women, Life and Freedom’, which has become a motto for those who defend equality, dignity and freedom in Iran,” said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
After prolonged applause from Members of the European Parliament, Metsola called for the award to serve “as a tribute to the courageous and defiant women, men and youth in Iran who, despite mounting pressure, are leading the push for change.” “The European Parliament listens to you, the world sees you and we stand with you,” the President of the European Parliament emphasized.
Aminiwho died in police custody just over a year ago after being detained by the so-called Iranian morality police for not wearing the Islamic veil correctly, was nominated by the three main groups in the European Parliament (popular, social democrats and liberals) and they was a clear favorite to win the prize posthumously, along with the movement that emerged after her death.
Representatives of the movement will receive the award ceremony of delivery which will take place during the December plenary session in Strasbourg (France).
