The conflict in the Middle East brings the topics of war and terror to local schools. Now there are new documents that provide playful explanations. An example is the comic book “The Peace Soup”. Here the children learn that countless obstacles must be overcome even after the war and that lasting harmony requires more than a ceasefire.
Sitting circles, information sheets and also a good debriefing go further into the subject. These types of documents are necessary because there are currently many question marks and sometimes ill-advised outbursts of anger and swear words on the unofficial timetable of our schools. The war in Israel has left its mark on our children, but teachers and parents are often troubled by the complex issue and more or less lost.
The top priority now is the explanatory conversation or the accompanying conversation offer, according to the education experts. René Bachmayer, professor at the Purkersdorf secondary school (Lower Austria) and lecturer at the University of Vienna, explains: “In principle, the subject is nothing new. The conflict in the Middle East itself has existed for a long time. Naturally, this escalation entails the need for discussion. In short, it is important to understand the context of the dispute and also to identify reliable sources of information.”
It is unanimously emphasized that the children should not be overwhelmed and that the information should be adapted to their age. For example, a toddler usually already knows what an argument between two people is. You can then declare war on him in the same way. Only it is not a dispute between two people, but between two countries. Depending on your age, you can go into more detail, for example by naming the whole thing more geographically or the rival parties.
Radicalization in the schoolyard continues to increase
While on the one hand a certain degree of war fatigue is developing among the local descendants after Ukraine and Co., on the other hand increasing radicalization – also in social media such as TikTok & Co. – for problems.
Minister of Education Martin Polaschek wants to expand the offer for schools and students: “There should be no room for extremism in our schools. For this reason, we also have a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of extremism. Appropriate prevention measures already exist for teachers of all school levels and school types. If a report is made, an appointment for a workshop can be quickly made,” says Polaschek.
