The shocking news about the death of former department head Christian Pilnacek is spreading quickly in Austria. According to information from “Krone”, Pilnacek was driving the wrong way on the A22 on Friday evening. After being arrested by the police, he may have taken his own life.
Pilnacek served more than two decades at the Justice Department, half of that time as perhaps the most powerful official in the House of Representatives. He headed the criminal law department and thus controlled the work of the Austrian Public Prosecution Service. Pilnacek was also considered the architect of the new criminal code, which came into force in 2008.
