Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg expressed her solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip on Friday. She posted photos on the X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram platforms of herself holding a sign that read “Stand with Gaza.” A symbol that has now earned her accusations of anti-Semitism.
“Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. The world must raise its voice and demand an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all affected civilians,” Greta Thunberg wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday. In the photo she is seen with other young women who are also holding signs with slogans such as ‘Free Palestine’ and ‘This Jew stands with Palestine’.

Below, the climate activist points to aid organizations. Thunberg also posted the same message on Instagram. In her story, which can be seen for a total of 24 hours, she also called for a global strike for the people of the Gaza Strip. For example, shops must remain closed on Fridays as a sign of solidarity, it says. Governments, politicians, but also the police must stand up for the rights of the civilian population in war.
Criticism: solidarity with Israel?
The climate activist not only received support for these statements, but also a lot of criticism. Above all, she is accused of not showing solidarity with the people of Israel. “It is sad and terrible that Greta Thunberg is increasingly turning out to be an anti-Semite. On Twitter, great “solidarity with Gaza” is demanded – and not even a single word about the Jewish children, women and men brutally murdered by Hamas,” wrote German journalist Sascha Lobo.

Other users on Instagram take it a step further and even accuse her of condoning the rape of girls and decapitated babies. With her post she supports a terrorist organization and is a stupid hypocrite. Some also noticed the sign calling for climate justice and asked what it had to do with the war in the Middle East.
Lately it has been shown time and again that discussions about the war in the Middle East can become very emotional. Just on Wednesday, two Socialist Youth officials from Vorarlberg were expelled from the party for sharing a pro-Palestinian post. In it they spoke out, among other things, in favor of the defense of Gaza.
The attack on Israel took place about two weeks ago. At least 3,785 people have been killed since then, according to Hamas authorities.
