Problems due to demos: – “Pro-Israel position plays into the hands of Hamas”

Date:

The longer the conflict lasts and the more people die, the greater the anger becomes. “I can imagine that certain Islamist cells now have a good opportunity to say: ‘Now we can create a mood for ourselves in this direction,’” says sociologist and integration researcher Kenan Güngör in the krone.tv interview with Jana Pasching. But the potential terror is just the tip of the iceberg…

Güngör is particularly bothered by the one-sided nature of the protests. “Some only see the Israeli victims, others only see the Palestinian ones. I don’t think that helps us.” People should have the right to protest and those attending pro-Palestinian demonstrations should not necessarily be stigmatized. Because that leads to a downward spiral.

“If people feel they are being treated unfairly, are already angry and the reporting about them is often negative, this leads to an increase in internal escalation. Then they are even more sensitive to extremist narratives that say that ‘the entire West is in cahoots with the Israelis and they are all against Muslims.'” All of this ultimately plays into Hamas’s hands.

“Hamas points out real injustice”
The reason why the terrorist organization exists and enjoys social support is because it points out real injustice, says Güngör. This injustice is being exploited, not to find a compromise, but rather to eliminate all of Israel. “I’m not sure how we can get out of this cycle of violence.”

Just as Güngör understands the side of the Israelis, he also understands the side of the Palestinians “who have seen a policy of occupation for more than fifty years, where they are really against the wall.” If people want to take to the streets for this, there must be room to give it. “Many are now using the attention to point out injustice.”

There should be no choice between being pro-Israel or pro-Palestinian. “This is not a football match. It is about ensuring that both countries, both peoples, can live in security, freedom and liberality, so to speak.” On the Israeli side, we currently have the most right-wing extremist government in Israel’s history, with religious fundamentalists, Güngoer said. On the Palestinian side there are people who resist. “These are also the Islamists, the cycling local Islamists and even terrorists.” That makes the situation very difficult.
