For Ukraine and Israel: Biden demands $100 billion from Congress

Date:

US President Joe Biden has requested an aid package from the US Congress worth 105 billion dollars (more than 94 billion euros) with support for Ukraine and Israel and for border protection. Above all, military matters are on the Democrat’s wish list.

The Democrat is demanding more than $61 billion for the Ukraine attacked by Russia alone, the White House announced on Friday. Biden had already announced on Thursday evening that he wanted to request an accompanying aid package – but did not provide details.

Military in the foreground
The vast majority is intended for military support in various forms – including expanding supplies of the US military, which has transferred its own equipment to Kiev.

Biden delivered a televised address to the nation on Thursday evening:

In view of the Gaza war, Biden is asking for more than 14 billion dollars (more than 13 billion euros) for Israel. It was said that the money would be used to strengthen Israel’s missile defense system. According to the White House, security measures at embassies in Israel and neighboring countries should also be increased. There are also billions more for humanitarian aid – for Ukraine as well as for Israel and the Gaza Strip.

The aid package also includes funds for security assistance in the Indo-Pacific. Allies in the region need this support given the threat from China, the report said.

The American border is also a problem
At the same time, border protection should also benefit from billions in funding. The situation at the US southern border, where US authorities regularly report record numbers of illegal border crossings, is an ongoing topic for Biden. Republicans accuse him of saying the situation at the border with Mexico has gotten out of hand.

It is unclear whether the aid package has a chance in the US Congress. There, Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives and Biden’s Democrats in the Senate. The budget planning did not take into account a request from Biden with requested funds for Ukraine from August. Legislative work is currently largely paralyzed because the US House of Representatives has no leader.

Biden said in his Oval Office speech on Thursday that the aid package should include “unprecedented aid for Israel.” “We will ensure that other hostile actors in the region know that Israel is stronger than ever and prevent this conflict from spreading,” Biden said. A second front has emerged for Israel, especially on the border with Lebanon.

The package must also ensure that Ukraine can continue to defend itself against Russia’s war of aggression.

The American president compares Putin and Hamas
Biden warned that it was important for the US to support both countries – even if they were far away. “Hamas and Putin pose different threats, but they have one thing in common: they both want to completely destroy neighboring democracies,” the 80-year-old said. History has shown that terrorists who paid no price for their terror and dictators who paid no price for their aggression caused more chaos and death and more destruction.

The US sees itself as Israel’s protecting power. Every year they support the country with billions, a significant part of which goes to defense against missiles and military technology. The US helped develop the ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense system, which has been in use since 2011.

As for Ukraine, the US is considered its most important ally in the fight against the Russian invasion. According to the US Department of Defense, the United States has provided Ukraine with military equipment worth about 44 billion dollars (41.6 billion euros) since the start of the war.
