Humanitarian aid supplies for more than two million people in the Gaza Strip remained stuck in Egypt on Friday afternoon. The reason is the conditions that have been imposed, says UN Secretary General António Guterres. He now called on all sides to take a humanitarian pause in the fighting.
“We need to get these trucks moving as quickly as possible, and with as many as possible,” the UN Secretary General said on Friday. Negotiations to reduce the requirements are currently in full swing. Presumably, both sides want controls to ensure that nothing other than humanitarian aid is brought across the border on the trucks.
“Behind these walls we have two million people suffering immensely. They have no water, no food, no medicine, no fuel, they are being shot at. (…) And on this side there are trucks (…) with exactly the stuff that is needed on the other side. These trucks mean the difference between life and death for so many people in Gaza,” Guterres said.
Unresolved security issues
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths had previously made similar statements. He and Guterres are currently in Egypt coordinating deliveries. Many trucks with drinking water, food and medicine have been parked in front of the border crossing for some time. The Egyptian government has so far kept the border crossing closed due to unresolved security issues. The United Nations demands appropriate guarantees from all parties, including Israel.
On Thursday, a state-affiliated Egyptian broadcaster reported that the only access to the Gaza Strip not controlled by Israel would open on Friday. Whether that would actually happen was still questionable on Friday afternoon. The new date was Saturday.
