On Sunday, the ferry ‘Marco Polo’ ran aground twice off the southern Swedish Baltic coast. This caused a leak, causing a lot of oil to escape. Images from Swedish media showed isolated birds covered in oil.
The ferry ‘Marco Polo’ sailed between the southern Swedish cities of Trelleborg and Karlshamn on Sunday with about 70 people on board. She then became stuck at sea near Hörvik. She ran aground the first time, then moved again, finally coming to a complete stop the second time. Erik Svensson of the Swedish Coast Guard reported this on Monday.
The passengers and part of the crew have already been able to leave the ship. According to current information, no one was injured in the incident. However, there was a leak that caused a lot of oil to escape. The affected area is about five to five and a half kilometers wide. The oil has already reached land, but much of it is still in the sea.
Oil must be collected
The oil must now be captured as early as possible, so that damage to the environment is minimal. Swedish media images have already shown several birds covered in oil. Several authorities representatives asked people to stay away from the affected area near Hörvik. The ferry’s hull must first be examined before any possible repairs can take place.
The ship originally wanted to continue its journey towards Klaipeda in Lithuania.
