A 20-year-old shared IS propaganda and called for donations to the terrorist organization. Even his closest friends turned away because his attitude was said to have become so radical. But the prospective home care worker sees it differently in the court in Vienna: he sympathized, but did not support…
“I was young. “That makes me curious, that murder” – the attempted explanation of a twenty-year-old for whom IS propaganda probably worked too well: he shared videos and tried to convince his friends of their radical views. He even met other sympathizers in an apartment in Vienna. “We just talked, ate and talked about Islam,” he said, claiming he was not a member of the terrorist organization.
It was too radical for my friends
But a friendly witness knows differently: the defendant is said to have repeatedly tried to convince him of his radical thinking and the Islamic State. The defendant’s train of thought was so extreme that he even turned away. For example, the 20-year-old wrote to him: “Be happy that you can eat kebab while others are fighting for their lives for IS.”
At the Vienna Regional Court, the future home care worker admits: “I learned more about this group. After a while I sympathized with them, but did not support them.” – but a call for donations for the widows of IS martyrs does not fit with this statement.
Contributed to the financing of terrorism
The lawyer describes his client’s beliefs as an interest in “fundamentalist Islam.” However, the jury sees a clear connection with Islamic State, with its contribution to the financing of terrorism. For this he is legally sentenced to an 18-month suspended prison sentence.
