Taken into court – Martha Krumpeck must now be jailed in Germany

Date:

Martha Krumpeck, the well-known co-founder of the Last Generation in Austria, was sentenced to one month in prison in Frankfurt on Monday. In protest against the verdict, she and a co-defendant glued themselves to the table in the courtroom while the verdict was being pronounced.

The trial concerned a protest in April last year in which both suspects blocked roads together with scientists from the group Scientist Rebellion. They took to the streets to draw attention to the climate crisis.

A similar process was stopped
Co-suspect Gudula Frieling was sentenced to a fine of 2,400 euros. The Last Generation shows no understanding for the punishment and states in a press release that a similar trial took place a few weeks ago, but was stopped due to “minor interest”.

“This verdict is a scandal. The message is clear: petrol and diesel have priority. Anyone who unequivocally demands protection of the climate and thus the survival of people ends up in prison. This is fossil madness! “I will not allow this sentence to deter me from continuing to peacefully prevent the destruction of our livelihoods,” Krumpeck said outside the courthouse.

Protests in the streets of Austria
As is known, during the unregistered demonstrations, several climate activists with banners line the streets, sticking to the concrete and blocking traffic. This often causes huge traffic jams. In Austria, for example, there are calls for a speed limit of 100 km/h on the highway and a halt to new oil and gas drilling.

This is Martha Krumpeck’s second prison sentence for a climate protest. It was not until the beginning of May that she had to serve a two-week prison sentence in Vienna. A few minutes after her release, she glued herself to the street at the next protest.
