Three in ten people in Austria encounter hostile or derogatory content on the internet. For social network users, the situation is even worse.
Overall, 31 percent of the population reports hostile or derogatory content on the Internet (45.5 percent among 16 to 24 year olds, 16.1 percent among 65 to 74 year olds), according to Statistics Austria’s survey of the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in households.
For social media users this is 39 percent, without them it is only 20 percent. Thematically, this content usually relates to political or social views, religion or belief, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender.
Most of the population is active on social networks
About 95 percent of the Austrian population aged 16 to 74 used the internet in the last three months before the survey, which was conducted from April to July 2023. This represents a slight increase compared to the previous year (+1.7 per cent). The majority, about 77 percent, used the internet several times a day. But not only the internet, social media channels are also used by a large part of the population. In total, 63 percent of the population aged 16 to 74 are represented on social networks.
The research is based on an EU regulation that obliges Austria and all other EU member states to provide data. Data was collected from approximately 4,400 households and approximately 5,700 individuals via telephone interviews and web questionnaires. The study was conducted from April to July 2023.
