While briefing the emergency services, a 46-year-old firefighter fell about 150 meters over a slope in Pusterwald (Murtal district) on Wednesday evening. The man was flown to hospital with serious injuries.
The joint exercise of several fire brigades from the Murtal district started around 7 p.m. and in the dark in a forest area. A total of 37 firefighters and five vehicles were involved. Emergency services from the Mautern Mountain Rescue Service also took part in this exercise. After the 46-year-old had instructed some emergency services on their position in the forest, he probably lost his balance in the area on the way back to the team meeting point for reasons that are still unclear. The 46-year-old from Murtal, wearing a uniform and helmet, fell about 150 meters down a slope.
Suspected traumatic brain injury
Comrades present and emergency services from the Mautern and Pöls mountain rescue services, some of whom had been warned, immediately provided first aid. They rescued the 46-year-old from the area and took him to an ambulance after he received initial medical care from an emergency physician. A Red Cross team then brought the seriously injured man to the landing site of the C14 rescue helicopter. He took the 46-year-old to the Linz General Hospital with suspected traumatic brain injury.
No evidence of third party negligence could be found. The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still ongoing.
