Impact near school – air strikes on Jabalia: More than 80 dead, according to Hamas

Date:

More than 80 people were killed in two Israeli attacks on the town of Jabalia in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, according to the Health Ministry, which is controlled by the radical Islamist Hamas. A building next to a school was bombed, but the rubble also killed and injured numerous people who had sought shelter there.

The UN-run Al-Fachura school in Jabalia, which is used as a shelter for refugees, was shelled on Saturday morning, a Hamas ministry representative told AFP news agency. 50 people were killed. According to ministry officials, 32 members of a family were killed in a second attack on another building.

People hit by debris at school
However, images shared online showed that it was not the school itself that was affected, but the building next door. But the people who had sought shelter in the school building were also affected by the airstrike due to the rubble.

The video footage, which we are not showing out of respect, shows corpses covered in dust and blood in the Al-Fakhura school, where mattresses were spread out under school desks. The authenticity of the recordings could not be verified.

Hamas uses civilians as shields
The Ministry of Health in Gaza has released a list of the names of all family members killed in the second attack. According to the information, 19 of the fatalities were children. Hamas is known for deliberately hiding its weapons and missile sites and command centers under buildings such as schools and hospitals to use civilians as living shields.

The former refugee camp grew into a city
Jabalia in the north of the Gaza Strip is the largest of eight former refugee camps in the Palestinian territory that have become a city. More than 80 percent of the camp’s residents are refugees or descendants of refugees who left their homes when the state of Israel was founded in 1948.

In early November, the Hamas government said that Israeli bombing of the refugee camp had killed more than 200 people within three days. Hundreds more people were injured.

Shifa hospital has been largely evacuated
Meanwhile, at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, only about 120 injured people and an unspecified number of premature babies remain in the largest clinic in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry. The Israeli military had previously stated that the evacuation took place at the director’s request.

Hospital director Mohammed Abu Salmiya had earlier said he had been ordered by the Israeli army to ensure “the evacuation of patients, injured, displaced persons and medical personnel.” The military, on the other hand, emphasized that it had never ordered the evacuation of patients or medical staff, but only granted the director’s “request” to allow the evacuation of more people from the hospital. The goal is to allow other people who sought protection in the clinic to “do so safely.” Medical staff will remain at the hospital to care for patients who cannot leave the clinic, the hospital said.

For the fourth day in a row, the Israeli army searched the sprawling hospital complex, which they suspect is a command center for the Islamist Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. According to UN figures, there were about 2,300 patients, injured and displaced people in hospital before the latest evacuation.

The situation in the West Bank continued to escalate
In the West Bank, the Israeli army said it had killed “several terrorists” at a refugee camp in the city of Nablus. The military announced on Saturday that an aircraft had attacked their hideout during the operation in Balata. According to Palestinian sources, five men were killed in an Israeli army drone strike on Saturday evening. Two people were also injured, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The situation in the West Bank has deteriorated significantly since the war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, began on October 7. About 200 Palestinians have been killed since then, according to the Health Ministry.
