Many reports of illness – infections are seasonal, but antibiotics are scarce

Date:

Many compatriots are currently suffering from a runny nose, sore throat or cough – as a result, almost 14,000 people reported sick in Upper Austria last week. In addition, several antibiotic medications for children and adults are only available in limited quantities.

The nose runs, the throat scratches, you cough and sneeze. Nearly 14,000 people in Upper Austria were on sick leave last week due to flu-like infections, and 40 fellow countrymen had to stay in bed with the real flu. Although the symptoms of both diseases are similar, they are much more severe with influenza. People over 60, infants and small children are particularly at risk of this disease developing a serious course. According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety AGES, around 4,000 people died from the real flu in Austria last year, five of whom were children.

What should you do if you are ill?
Anyone suffering from a flu-like infection should “drink 1.5 liters of water or unsweetened tea every day, lie in bed and ensure that the room is well ventilated,” informs the Upper Austrian Medical Association. If the symptoms do not improve after five days, it is advisable to see your doctor.

Panic buying can lead to shortages
According to the Chamber of Pharmacists, classic flu medications such as painkillers, nasal sprays or cough syrup are currently easily available and should not be missing from any medicine cabinet. “But panic buying can lead to shortages,” it points out. These are currently available antibiotics for both children and adults. For example, Ceclor or Klacid are currently not available, or only to a limited extent, in liquid or tablet form. According to the list of the Federal Office for Public Health, the fever-reducing Nureflex juice for small children is still not available.

Not everything was bad!
Everyone knows this: you’re too sick to work, but too healthy to go to bed, so you somehow drag yourself to work. During Corona times it would have been impossible to sit in the office with a runny nose or a constant coughing fit. Today, this decision is once again left up to each individual. One of my favorite colleagues is also suffering from a bad male cold and does the only right thing: he goes home and rests until he gets better. Maybe not everything was bad during Corona times
