Spectacular accident Friday evening on the Brenner highway A13 in Tyrol: The Bulgarian driver of a truck with a petrol tank probably left the road near Steinach. When he wanted to return the transporter, the vehicle tipped over. The A13 then had to be closed in both directions. The driver suffered serious injuries.
The devastating accident took place near Steinach am Brenner around 11:15 p.m. The 55-year-old Bulgarian was on his way from Italy to Innsbruck when his truck ended up on the grass verge for an unknown reason. At least those are the “traces”, as Florian Raffl from the local fire brigade describes to the “Krone”.
Gasoline tank ripped from truck
“The driver probably then tried to steer the truck back onto the A13. After about 50 to 80 meters it tipped over,” Raffl continued. According to police, the van was powered by liquefied natural gas. “The accident caused one of the two tanks to be torn away. Gas was leaking out,” the fire chief said.
Total closure for two hours
As a result, the A13 Brenner motorway was completely closed in both directions by the police for safety reasons. “After the fuel tank had been largely emptied, the recovery of the truck could begin,” police investigators said.
Truck driver seriously injured
The closure was lifted to the south shortly before 2 a.m. Two hours later, traffic was able to move towards Innsbruck again. The 55-year-old truck driver was seriously injured in the accident. After the first treatment, he was taken by ambulance to the clinic in Innsbruck.

The van was also loaded with all kinds of stuff. Or, as Commander Raffl put it: “Like cabbage and turnips”. Everything was there, from empty beer kegs, Styrofoam, boxes of silicone hoses to charging points for electric cars.
