At the Fukushima nuclear power plant, four workers accidentally came into contact with radioactively contaminated water after a hose came loose during cleaning work.
The accident happened during cleaning of the plant that processes water for discharge into the sea, a spokesman for nuclear power plant operator Tepco said on Friday. Two workers were splashed and two others were infected while cleaning up the water.
Two employees were taken to hospital as a precaution. According to the information, their radiation levels were above the limit considered harmless.
Men stay in the hospital for two weeks
However, according to a doctor, there is little chance that those affected will suffer burns due to radiation exposure. According to the TEPCO spokesperson, the two men will remain in hospital for approximately two weeks for follow-up examinations.
At the end of August, Tepco started discharging the Fukushima cooling water into the sea, which was controversial at home and abroad. A second phase of releasing the treated water into the Pacific Ocean, which will take place in phases and currently last until early 2050, was completed this week.
Radioactive particles are filtered from the water
According to Japanese plans, more than 1.3 million cubic meters of water from the Fukushima power plant will be discharged into the sea in the coming decades. According to TEPCO, all radioactive components, except tritium, were previously filtered from the water.
18,000 deaths as a result of the disaster
The east coast of Japan was hit by a major earthquake and tsunami in 2011. 18,000 people died as a result of the natural disaster. It also resulted in the failure of the cooling system of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, and a meltdown occurred in three of the six reactors.
