Israel accuses the radical Islamist group Hamas of using hospitals in the Gaza Strip as strategic centers for its attacks on Israel. “Hamas is waging war against Israel from hospitals,” Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari told reporters on Friday (video above).
The militant Palestinian organization uses the hospitals “as command centers and shelters” with access to its underground tunnel system. “The terrorists are moving freely in Al-Shifa Hospital” (the largest hospital in the coastal area) in Gaza City and in other hospitals, the army spokesman said.
Population as ‘human shield’
Furthermore, Hamas uses the fuel stored in these civilian facilities for its attacks. “There is fuel in the hospitals and Hamas is using it for its terrorist infrastructure,” Hagari said. Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using the Gaza Strip’s population as a “human shield.”
Hamas immediately dismissed the accusations as “unfounded.” The Israeli army spokesman’s comments had “no basis whatsoever,” Hamas official Issat Al-Rishk said. In turn, he accused Israel of “paving the way for a new massacre of our people with these accusations.”
Hamas launched a major attack on Israel on October 7, killing approximately 1,400 people and kidnapping 229 people as hostages in the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli information.
Massive airstrikes on Hamas targets
In response to the major attack, Israel sealed off the Gaza Strip and launched massive airstrikes on suspected Hamas targets. More than 7,300 people have now been killed, according to the Hamas-led Health Ministry. However, this information cannot be independently verified.
