Seven fire brigades responded to a fire at the Laakirchen paper factory on Friday morning. The fire started due to self-heating in the fuel processing room in a wood chip bunker. Firefighting is still ongoing.
On Friday around 3:15 a.m., a fire broke out in the fuel storage facility of the Laakirchen paper factory. The fermentation of certain substances caused self-heating in the fuel (waste wood, bark, mud). Chemical processes eventually caused the material to spontaneously ignite.
The fire brigade has to shred 3,000 tons of material
This involves approximately 3,000 tons of heated fuel that must be chopped and extinguished by the fire brigade, otherwise renewed spontaneous combustion cannot be ruled out. The extinguishing work will probably last until October 28. There are a total of seven fire brigades with approximately 110 emergency services and 20 vehicles.
