Tenants of an apartment complex in Villach were woken from their sleep on Saturday night by shrill smoke detectors and the smell of fire. They immediately alerted the fire brigade and probably saved a life.
Around 4:30 a.m., the Villach main fire station and the Villach-Perau volunteer fire brigade received an alarm that there had been a fire in an apartment building in the Auen district. When they arrived on the scene, firefighters broke open the locked door of the apartment in question and found a young man inside.
Slept deeply and soundly
“The tenant was found sleeping in the apartment, which was already heavily smoky, by our security guard’s respiratory protection team. He was immediately brought out and cared for by the Red Cross,” said Martin Regenfelder, deputy commander of the HFW Villach.
The cause of the heavy smoke development turned out to be burnt food in the oven. “Once again an operation in which the mandatory smoke detectors in apartments saved lives and prevented further damage,” said Regenfelder.
