Former US Vice President Mike Pence is throwing in the towel in the opposition Republicans’ race for the presidential nomination. “To the American people I say, this is not my time,” Pence told attendees at the Republican Jewish Coalition conference in Las Vegas on Saturday. He made no election recommendations, but called for electing someone who appeals to the better side of the people and can lead with “civility.”
Pence launched his campaign for president last June. However, his campaign never got off the ground. Pence was far behind in the polls and was having trouble raising money for his campaign, according to media reports. “We always knew this would be a tough fight, but I have no regrets,” he said.
Argument with ex-boss Trump
The 64-year-old had a falling out with his former boss, ex-President Donald Trump. He repeatedly warned that no one who placed himself above the US Constitution should become US President. On the day the Capitol was stormed on January 6, 2021, Trump asked him to choose between Trump and the Constitution. As then president of the Senate, Pence refused to block the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory. Many Trump supporters see this as a betrayal, and Trump himself accused him of cowardice.
The archconservative Pence stood loyally by Trump’s side during his controversial presidency. Since storming Congress, he has increasingly distanced himself from Trump. The presidential and congressional elections will take place in November 2024. In the preceding months, the candidates of the respective parties will be determined through extensive primaries.
Some more competitors
The Republican field of candidates is led by former US President Donald Trump. Also in the running are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. US President Joe Biden is running for re-election among the Democrats. As an incumbent president, he is unlikely to face any serious competition within the party during the election campaign.
