A terrible industrial accident occurred on Thursday morning in the German municipality of Aitrach (Baden-Württemberg), not far from the Austrian border. A 54-year-old construction worker was buried alive in a pit of earth. Despite immediate rescue measures, all help for the man came too late.
According to previous findings by German police, a 54-year-old man was descending into an approximately three-meter-deep construction pit in Aitrach around 8:30 a.m. when parts of the earth came loose and buried him several meters deep.
Extremely difficult recovery
A large contingent of rescue workers, including the local fire brigade and the technical aid organization, immediately went to the construction site where the construction of a canal was planned. After extensive rescue measures – due to the heavy sliding of the ground, the site had to be repeatedly secured step by step with the help of formwork – the buried victim was only found dead.
