Chained to oil barrels – climate protest: activists block the Naschmarkt

Date:

On Saturday morning, a demonstration of the action group “Extinction Rebellion Austria” took place on the Naschmarkt in Vienna, directly in front of the Secession. In the so-called Blood of the Earth campaign, they used their naked bodies to take a stand against the destruction of the Earth by burning oil and gas.

Extinction Rebellion activists chained themselves to oil drums and painted their bare chests with the words “Get out of oil and gas”. In addition, loud music was played and there was dancing. The campaign aims to send a loud signal against the destruction of livelihoods.

“We fight for a solidarity society”
“In our culture, women and nature have long been viewed as resources to be ruthlessly and shamelessly exploited. The women’s movement and the ecological movement are protesting with all their might against the deadly consequences of our aggressive market economy system. We are fighting for a motherly, caring and solidarity-based society”, explains Patrizia Bitter of Extinction Rebellion.

Police broke up the meeting a short time later
The Vienna police are currently trying to break up the meeting. Extinction Rebellion activists took to Twitter to say that some protesters were still fighting the eviction.
