Consumption fell – Austrian households collected less waste this year

Date:

In 2022, Austrian households collected 3.5 percent less packaging and waste paper than the year before. This can be attributed to the fact that people have consumed less.

“The reduced collection volume is mainly due to the inflationary crisis caused by the war in Ukraine: people are generally consuming less,” said Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA) representatives on Tuesday. The decrease is particularly visible in paper packaging, newspapers and magazines (minus 6.6 percent). This also includes advertising brochures. The trend towards digitization and the consumption of digital media is visible here, according to ARA board spokesman Harald Hauke.

decline in plastics
This time, Austrians collected 2.4 percent less plastic packaging than last year. In total there was 176,000 tons of plastic packaging. While the decrease is mainly observed in areas without tourism, there is an increase in the amount collected in tourist regions.

In the coming year, a total of 20 percent more can be collected, the ARA calculates. As reported, the collection of plastic packaging will be standardized throughout Austria from January. In detail, all plastic packaging such as yogurt pots, plastic bags or tubes, together with plastic bottles and drink cartons, are collected in the yellow bin or yellow bag. Until now, lightweight packaging has been treated differently depending on the state, for example in Vienna it was incinerated as residual waste.

Collected more glass
The amount of glass collected increased this year by 2.5 percent to 260,000 tons. According to ARA, the resumption of tourism and celebrations have contributed to this. For metal, the amount collected is at the same level as last year at 31,900 tonnes.
