Only bed, bread, soap – Solingen: Germans now tighten asylum rules

Date:

The German government is tightening the rules for asylum seekers after the massacre in Solingen. After the knife attack that left three dead, a large package of measures was agreed: refugees were only allowed to be provided with food, a place to sleep and drugstore items.

As “Bild” reports, the benefits of so-called “Dublin cases” will be massively reduced: asylum seekers who entered and registered via another EU country should only receive the minimum. So bed, bread and soap – no more cash or cards.

If you go on home leave, your asylum status will expire
Measures are also planned in the areas of gun control, security powers, deportations and prevention. All refugees who go on holiday in their home country should lose their asylum status. Exceptions will only be allowed if there is a valid reason, such as the funeral of relatives.

Ban on knives in long-distance transport and at public festivals
In addition, a ban on knives in buses and trains in long-distance transport is planned and the police are to be given more powers. In the future, checks at train stations will always be allowed and law enforcement officers will also be allowed to use Tasers. In addition, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is allowed Using biometric internet data to establish the identity of migrants.

Still to come: an “absolute ban on knives at folk festivals, sporting events, fairs, exhibitions, markets.” The states also have the option of introducing a knife ban at train stations. In the future, authorities will be allowed to use AI programs to track down Islamists.

The task force must make more deportations possible
In addition, a “Dublin task force of the federal and state governments” will be set up. This is intended to find out how to deport more refugees who are already registered in another EU country. Also planned: an extension of the European asylum reform so that other EU countries can more easily accept refugees back. According to ‘Bild’, the current readmission rates are extremely low.
