Ukraine reported the largest Russian attack since the beginning of the year on Wednesday morning. Russia shelled more than 100 locations in 10 regions of Ukraine within 24 hours, Kiev said.
A total of 118 locations in ten regions were attacked, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko was quoted in online media on Wednesday. “This is the largest number of towns and villages attacked since the beginning of the year,” he said.
Fire after attack on oil refinery
The government in Kiev also reported a Russian attack on an oil refinery in the central industrial city of Kremenchuk. There were no casualties, but about 100 firefighters battled the blaze for hours.
Local officials said one person was killed during the overnight shelling in the northeastern region of Kharkov. Another person was killed in the southern Kherson region (see video above). A woman was also killed and four people injured in the city of Nikopol, the local governor said.
18 Russian drones shot down
Ukraine’s air force said on Wednesday it had shot down 18 of 20 Russian drones launched during the night. The Russian Defense Ministry said it shot down two Ukrainian drones over the Bryansk and Kursk regions. Both regions border Ukraine.
Plumes of smoke above the Crimean Bridge
As videos on social networks (see tweet) show, on Wednesday morning smoke rose over the Crimean Bridge in several places and an air raid siren could be heard. The online portal “Baza” also reports that traffic across the bridge connecting the Russian-annexed peninsula to the Russian mainland is currently closed.
It is currently unclear what caused the smoke. It is conceivable that because of the air raid siren, smoke machines were intended to make it more difficult to hit the structure during air raids. An air raid siren was issued in the port city of Sevastopol, traffic on the Crimean Bridge and shipping traffic was halted in the early morning hours.
