The well-known Russian pop singer Alla Pugacheva is a critic of the attack on Ukraine and drew attention to herself with violent slogans. She has lived in Israel since the beginning of the Russian invasion. Now she’s supposed to be back in her old house and it makes you wonder: will she be okay?
On Thursday evening, the 74-year-old crossed the Russian border in the Pskov region, according to reports from the Russian state news agency “RIA Novosti” and the Telegram channel “Baza”, citing Pugacheva’s assistant. The assistant was silent about the reasons. “She came for whatever,” the woman said quietly. She also did not specify how long the singer planned to stay in the country. At the border, Pugacheva allegedly covered her face with a poster, writes ‘Baza’. She travels alone, without her husband.
High risk of reprisals
The boldness of this action is evident from the arrests and convictions that take place every day in Russia – often based on small things. As in the case of the Russian artist Sascha Skotschilenko. She is in Russian custody for putting anti-war stickers on the price tags in a supermarket. Or the case of the 36-year-old co-founder of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot Pyotr Versilov. He had condemned the wartime massacre of Ukrainian civilians in Bucha on his social networks and was now sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison.
In exile in Israel
In the spring of 2022, Pugacheva left Russia with her family and emigrated to Israel. Her husband Maxim Galkin, who is 27 years younger and is known in Russia as a comedian, presenter and singer, was previously labeled a ‘foreign agent’ by the Kremlin. Since 2012, civil society organizations and since 2020 also private individuals who are “politically active” and who, according to the state, are supported or influenced by foreign countries, can be registered under the heading of “foreign agent”.
Here Pugacheva’s husband Maxim Galkin:
This classification comes with great intimidation for those affected. Pugacheva stood by her husband and demanded that she too be registered as a ‘foreign agent’. Galkin is a “true and unsellable patriot of Russia who wishes his homeland prosperity, a peaceful life, freedom of expression and an end to the death of our fellow human beings for illusory goals that make our country a pariah and make life difficult for our citizens . ”
After the terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel, Galkin recorded a video of himself reporting that he and Pugacheva felt in good hands there. They are proud to be connected to a nation that stays together in this way. Leaving Israel is therefore not on their plan.
Dazzling show format
Pugacheva has shaped rock and pop music in Russia since the 1970s. Her success lasted longer than the fall of the Soviet Union; her constant TV presence made her one of Russia’s most dazzling show stars and her marriage to presenter and comedian Maxim Galkin, 27 years her junior, was a constant topic for the gossip media.
