I don’t want to fail – Giorgia Meloni complains about misogyny

Date:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni complains of misogyny against herself. In an interview with star journalist Bruno Vespa for his book ‘Il rancore e la speranza’ (The grudge and the hope), Meloni accused her political opponents of this. They wanted to prove “that a woman cannot withstand the pressure”. In the interview, the head of government ruled out the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle.

“I want to complete a five-year term in the same government I started with. That would be the first time in the history of the Italian Republic,” said Meloni, who became Italy’s first head of government in October 2022.

Media entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi, who died in June, was prime minister for five years, albeit under two different governments.

Enemies ‘don’t scare Meloni’
“I am aware that there are enemies who would do anything to overthrow me,” Meloni said. ‘But they don’t scare me. As I said at the beginning of my term of office: I will not allow myself to be blackmailed. But I understand that this is a problem for some power groups that have controlled Italy for a long time,” she added.

She denied disputes within the government camp, which the media repeatedly reported.

In office for over a year
Prime Minister Meloni has been in power for over a year. Their post-fascist Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia) party remains the country’s strongest party with around 28 percent of the vote, according to surveys. Meloni governs with a center-right coalition that also includes Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini’s League and the liberal-conservative Forza Italia.
