“Buy a roof and get a free turkey and an AR-15 (a semi-automatic rifle, mind you)” – a roofing company in the US state of Florida is currently luring people with this macabre advertising campaign. And customers take up the offer…
“The turkey brings you all to the table so you can spend time together. The roof protects your home and the AR-15 protects your family,” said Jason Polly, president of Roof EZ. He believes that his company’s offering for Thanksgiving (a harvest festival celebrated in late November in the US, where a turkey is traditionally served) couldn’t have been better.
Two mass shootings a day in the US
Statistically, there has been an average of two mass shootings per day (!) in America so far in 2023. And as was the case during the Maine massacre at the end of October (krone.at report), the killers prefer to use AR-15 rifles. That is why the PR campaign of roofing company Roof EZ is condemned by many as tasteless and macabre.
“Every homeowner should own an AR-15.”
In an interview with the TV channel KMVT, company boss Polly sees nothing objectionable about his offer: “The world is crazy right now. Why not give away a roof and an AR-15 to protect the family? Every homeowner should own an AR-15!” The ex-army member got the idea during a trip through Alabama, where companies attract gun enthusiasts with similar campaigns.
“Background check for every buyer”
The ex-army member doesn’t seem to consider the possibility that one of the semi-automatic rifles he gave away could cause the next massacre: “Any buyer who wants an AR-15 must undergo a background check. Only then will he get the gun. We stand for gun safety.”
Roof EZ also offers its customers the opportunity to get a discount of $500 (the equivalent of just under 470 euros) on their bill instead of on the rifle. So far no one has accepted this offer…
