Apparently the Polish president is trying to further delay the change of power in the country. Because Andrzej Duda gave the previous Prime Minister and party friend Mateusz Morawiecki the task of forming a government. He won the parliamentary elections on October 15. But his national-conservative PiS does not have a majority capable of governing in parliament.
Duda emphasized on Monday evening that he was following good parliamentary tradition, according to which a representative of the strongest faction was given the task of forming a government. This step by the president, who himself comes from the PiS camp, could cause Poland to experience weeks of political instability. Duda had previously set the date for the constituent session of the new parliament on November 13 – almost a month after the elections.
Opposition party is already working on a coalition agreement
In the parliamentary elections on October 15, Donald Tusk’s liberal-conservative Citizens’ Coalition (KO) won a clear majority of seats, along with two other opposition parties, the conservative Third Way and the left-wing Lewica alliance. The three parties are already working on a coalition agreement.
Tusk: “Previous government wants to steal time”
The previous ruling party PiS, on the other hand, became the strongest political force, but lacked an absolute majority and has no coalition partner. This means that Morawiecki’s attempt to form a government is most likely doomed to failure. Tusk criticized the decision as an incomprehensible mistake. The current government camp wanted to “steal a few more days, two or three weeks of time,” news portal TVN24.pl quoted the opposition leader as saying.
