Strange incident in Schärding. While unloading the large Christmas fir on the Schärding village square, the trunk suddenly split in two. Fortunately, no people were injured. A replacement tree had to be organized.
When Christmas trees are placed in central squares in cities and towns, they usually attract many spectators.
That was also the case on Tuesday morning on Schärding’s town square. A pine tree of over 20 meters high, specially donated by the municipality of Schardenberg, was delivered on a low loader. When the beautiful tree was lifted with a large crane around 9:30 am, there was a sudden cracking sound – and the pine tree broke in half.
All that remained of the previously proud tree were two rather pathetic green mounds.
New pine trees now adorn the town square
“The most important thing is: no one was injured in the incident and there was no other material damage,” emphasizes Mayor Günter Streicher (SPÖ). The sadness over the broken pine tree lasted only a short time, the search for a replacement began immediately.
And one was quickly found. The new Christmas tree was put up that afternoon by construction site workers. “It is also a very nice specimen,” says Streicher happily.
