Israeli forces report progress in their offensive in northern Gaza Strip. So far, 130 shafts of Hamas’ extensive tunnel network have been destroyed. According to the military, one of the terrorist organization’s main weapons developers was also killed.
This concerns Mahsein Abu Zina, head of the arms and industrial department of the radical Islamic Palestinian group. Abu Zina was an expert in missile development. Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, repeatedly fires them into Israeli areas.
Terrorists killed again
On Wednesday evening, Israeli forces said they had killed several terrorists in the Gaza Strip. They wanted to fire anti-tank missiles at the soldiers. Another group is reportedly responsible for rocket fire on Israel. Several people were also killed in the airstrike on this terrorist cell.
As it advances, the Israeli army is focusing on disarming Hamas’ extensive network of terror tunnels. The armed forces released videos on Wednesday showing heavy equipment excavating tunnel entrances in the sandy soil and lifting a concrete slab (see above). A video clip showed a tunnel lined with concrete slabs. Water and oxygen supplies in the tunnels indicate a planned longer stay, the military said. Tunnel shafts were also discovered beneath a Hamas training camp in the northern Gaza Strip and destroyed.
Ground troops in the center of Gaza City
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel has “one target: the Hamas terrorists in Gaza, their infrastructure, their commanders, bunkers, communications rooms.” This marked the beginning of the next phase of the Israeli offensive. A month after the Hamas attack, Israel said on Tuesday it had entered the center of Gaza City with ground troops. Gaza City, Hamas’s main stronghold in the coastal area, is encircled and the Gaza Strip is effectively divided into a northern and a southern half.
Hamas said its fighters had inflicted heavy losses on Israeli forces. Israeli tanks encountered strong resistance from Hamas fighters, who used the tunnel network for ambush attacks.
The entire reservist division in action
According to the army, an entire division of reservists is involved in the Israeli army’s ground operation in the Gaza Strip. The army said Wednesday it was the first time since the 1982 Lebanon war that an entire division of reservists had deployed to enemy territory. The 252nd Division, which has been operating in the north of the Gaza Strip since Saturday, consists of four infantry brigades and one tank brigade (a total of about 10,000 soldiers). In addition to the division, other troops are also involved.
