Since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7 and the war in the Gaza Strip, anti-Semitic violence has increased worldwide. Holocaust survivors are reminded of their most terrible memories. “Jews are more threatened than ever since the Holocaust,” says survivor Gabriella Karin.
She and countless other survivors were interviewed by the March of the Living organization after the October 7 terrorist attack. The current situation is shocking, Karin said during her conversation. Israel and the Jewish community worldwide are “in a fight for their existence.” Tuesday marked exactly one month since Hamas terrorists carried out a surprise attack on Israel. About 1,400 people were killed, mostly civilians. More than 240 hostages, including children, the elderly, men and women, were kidnapped.
According to the organization March of the Living, many of those interviewed “initially hesitated to speak out out of fear for their own safety, fearing that revealing their identities could put them in immediate danger.”
Back then, “it started with words and continued with actions.”
“I am shocked to see Jews being attacked today. Jews are not safe,” Auschwitz survivor Nate Leipciger, who now lives in Canada, told the organization. He remembers growing up in Poland as a little boy and seeing the rise of Nazi Germany. “I remember being attacked in the street and shouting, ‘Dirty Jews are going to Palestine.’” He saw where anti-Semitism could lead. “It started with words and continued with actions.”
Holocaust survivor Manja Wallenfels also no longer feels safe today: “I think twice before wearing my Star of David. I’m afraid to go to synagogue.” She never thought something like this would happen again.
“Hamas has come to slaughter children, young and old”
Tirza Halivni, who now lives in Israel, experienced the pogrom night of November 9 to 10, 1938 as a four-year-old child. “I never in my life thought something as terrible as this would happen again,” Halivni said. On October 7, Hamas came to slaughter children, young and old. “I think back to 85 years ago, how terrible it was, and now we’re reliving it.”
