Premature deaths – Indian children on holiday due to mega smog

Date:

The holidays for primary school students in India are postponed. Instead of January, the children will have time off from Thursday until the end of next week. The reason for this is the enormous air pollution.

Due to the bad and persistent smog in the Indian capital New Delhi, the winter holidays for primary school students have been postponed.

To better protect the children from bad air pollution, they should be free from Thursday until the end of next week instead of January, as the government has announced. Further measures would be announced later.

Despite the ban: farmers burn crop residues
There are school holidays in the Indian capital due to air pollution when the smog is particularly bad, especially in winter. The reason for the strong winter smog in and around New Delhi is farmers in surrounding states who illegally burn crop residues to quickly and cheaply grow crops again. In addition, there is dust from construction sites and waste incineration, as well as exhaust fumes from cars and industry.

Yet many people in the Indian capital do not see the enormous air pollution as a major problem: despite the mega smog, the important Hindu light festival Diwali will take place next weekend and will be celebrated with thousands of fireworks.

Premature deaths due to particulate matter pollution
Particulate pollution in and around New Delhi is among the highest in the world. It is especially strong in winter. It is currently many times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) limits considered acceptable and therefore has many negative health effects. Last but not least, there are also premature deaths.
