This ‘joke’ seems to have gone completely wrong: a restaurateur from Upper Austria posted a clearly Islamophobic message in large letters on a blackboard in front of his restaurant. The action quickly sparked outrage on social media. The landlord is now rowing back and publicly apologizing.
“Statistically, people who eat pork are less likely to blow themselves and others up.” This sentence recently appeared on a plaque in front of the kuk Hofbeisl in Bad Ischl.
A photo of it quickly spread on social media and many people were outraged. “Audacity. “Fascist capital instead of cultural capital 2024,” complains one user on Instagram. One user wrote on Facebook: “Now Muslims are ‘unintentionally’ being labeled as potential (sic!) murderers. Yes.”
Misunderstood satire?
Landlord Marcus Hofbauer, who says he “got the saying off the internet”, is now publicly apologizing on Facebook. The innkeeper claims this is satire. Only later did it become clear to him that the message could be interpreted as religiously hostile.
“Especially in times as sensitive as the current one, even the hint of racism or resentment towards people who think and believe differently has no justification whatsoever,” says Hofbauer sadly.
