After the federal congress was postponed from December to February, Michel Reimon, member of the Green National Council, is dropping out as a candidate. He disagrees with the justification for postponing the party conference due to the war in the Middle East: “According to the new strategic guidelines, I am simply not a suitable candidate.”
The Greens are still struggling to draw up a list of candidates for the EU elections. Reimon, who already sat in the EU Parliament for the Greens, announced on Thursday that he did not want to stand as a candidate after all.
“If oil and gas regimes from Russia to Iran blanket our world with terror, war and oppression, with disinformation and incitement, with right-wing extremism, Islamism and anti-Semitism, then we Greens must put this at the heart of our foreign policy. and European policy, I am convinced of that,” says Reimon. With this content he actually wanted to stand as a candidate for the upcoming European elections.
Candidacy no longer “possible”
“I wanted to propose this line to the Federal Board of Directors and use it to run for the Federal Congress. That is no longer possible,” he referred to the postponement of the Federal Congress from December 16 to February 24, which was announced on Wednesday. The reason for this was that the election campaign after the terrorist attack on Israel “did not want to be artificially prolonged in a particularly turbulent atmosphere.”
“I understand the need to pause and reflect in the midst of all the suffering and misery. To be quiet for a moment,” he wrote. “But the fact that it should not determine the discussions and speeches at the beginning of the European elections is a striking difference with my political assessment… actually the exact opposite of my request,” he criticized his party’s decision.
“I wanted to draw attention to exactly these connections and shine a spotlight on the profiteers in the background,” he explained. “I should not run for office under this principle.” He thinks that’s a shame, but he will still stand as a candidate for the Greens in next year’s elections.
