From July 2024, gay and lesbian couples in Latvia will have the opportunity to officially register their partnership. On Thursday, the parliament of the Baltic EU country in Riga passed several legal changes that provide homosexuals with legal protection for their relationships.
However, these new regulations do not mean equality with marriage. At the request of an opposition MP, this statement was explicitly written into law. The Latvian Constitution also clearly defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
The regulation is intended to provide a minimum level of protection
After a sometimes heated debate, a narrow majority of the 100 MPs in the Saeima parliament voted in favor of Latvia’s controversial regulations, which aim to provide a minimum of legal and social protection to same-sex couples.
Homosexuality is often still a taboo subject in Latvia and is met with reservations. In this year’s Rainbow Europe rankings from the organization ILGA Europe, the Baltic state in Northeastern Europe ranks 37. The legal situation for LGBTQ people within the EU was only worse in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.
