“That would only be fair”: – Ukraine threatens Russia with retaliatory strikes

Date:

Ukraine has threatened reprisals against Russia’s oil and gas sector if the aggressor carries out further targeted attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this winter. “That would only be fair,” said Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushenko.

According to the Ukrinform news agency, Galushchenko was asked in an interview with the information website ‘Politico’ whether a ‘reaction’ from Kiev would also have consequences for the neighboring country’s oil and gas sector.

“In response, we would take the same approach by attacking energy infrastructure,” Galushchenko said. However, he added that he was not a member of the Ukrainian military and therefore had not had relevant conversations with representatives of the US government.

Is there a risk of a rise in oil and gas prices?
The Minister of Energy does not believe that such attacks can lead to an increase in world oil and gas prices. Ultimately, other producers could compensate for the loss of Russian supplies.

According to Politico, Europe has already significantly reduced its dependence on Russian oil and natural gas, mainly by importing liquefied natural gas from the US. But Russia continues to sell large amounts of fossil fuels to China and India.

Austria remains highly dependent on Russian gas supplies
Due to OMV’s long-term contractual ties with the Russian state-owned company Gazprom, Austria remains highly dependent on Russian gas supplies and transfers billions of euros to Moscow for this purpose. These amounts far exceed the humanitarian aid that Austria has provided to the candidate country Ukraine.
