Emergency services in particular were concerned for a long time about how emergency supplies could be maintained in the event of a crisis by switching to electric mobility. Until now, diesel generators in particular were considered the most reliable variant. According to a current analysis, this no longer applies.
This is the conclusion of a recent study by researchers at the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). They found that new clean energy solutions are both cheaper and less susceptible to disruption than their fossil fuel counterparts – even those of ‘military grade’.
Military standards show electrical benefits
Testing of the two systems was conducted in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense requirements for maintaining critical electrical loads during a power outage for a period of 14 days. “The diesel-free LDES system outperforms the traditional diesel-based system and delivers large net savings,” the researchers said.
“The continued rapid decline in the cost of solar photovoltaics (PV) makes PV systems economically attractive in many locations. This decline is expected to continue, further increasing the positive NPV in the future,” the scientists explain in their study, published under the title “Long Duration Energy Storage: Resilience for Military Installations.”
New battery technology is likely to be groundbreaking
Antora Energy’s innovative carbon-based batteries were used at three different military bases. They have replaced the lithium-ion batteries previously used in such storage systems. The system is not yet ready for large-scale use, but the results of the tests indicate that its introduction – especially in the military sector – is unlikely to take too long.
US Deputy Secretary of Defense Michael McGhee described the new system as “the most likely way to easily and simply generate electricity without the need for an off-base supply chain.”
