Stalled fronts – American institute: Russia is preparing a wave of attacks

Date:

According to American experts, Russia currently wants to regain the initiative in the war zone in eastern Ukraine with several parallel attacks. The cities of Kupyansk in the Kharkov region and Avdiivka and Bakhmut in the Donetsk region have been particularly hotly contested.

However, the success of these efforts is questionable due to continued pressure from the Ukrainian counter-offensive, according to the US Institute for War Studies (ISW) in Washington.

Ukrainian partial successes
Ukrainian authorities also admitted that the situation on the front was difficult and complex for Kiev’s troops. Nevertheless, American experts consider it a success that Ukrainian forces were able to establish themselves on the left bank of the Dnipro in the Kherson region – positions previously held by Russian forces.

The ISW analysis shows that there has been exceptionally heavy fighting since October by the Ukrainian defenders, who maintained their positions on the bank and were able to continue supplying the troops there.

Russian state media recently briefly reported that Moscow’s troops would have to withdraw there, but then withdrew these reports. There was talk of an alleged Ukrainian provocation.

Is trench warfare becoming increasingly entrenched?
The situation on the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine is considered deadlocked – with no significant progress for either of the two warring parties. Ukraine’s counter-offensive has so far fallen far short of its own expectations. The country has been defending itself against Russia’s war of aggression with Western military aid for almost 21 months. The goal of a Ukrainian liberation of the partially Russian-occupied regions of Kherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk and Donetsk is not yet in sight.
