Just a month ago, the Syrian government was accused of systematic torture before the UN’s highest court, the ICJ. Canada and the Netherlands are claimants (see video above). France has now issued an international arrest warrant for ruler Bashar al-Assad – over his alleged responsibility for a poison gas attack in Syria in 2013.
“An independent judiciary thus recognizes that the chemical weapons attack could not have taken place without the knowledge of the Syrian president,” said Syrian lawyer and human rights activist Masen Darwisch. He is also one of the plaintiffs.
The sarin attack in the Ghouta region in August 2013 killed around 1,400 people. French investigative judges have been investigating the circumstances of the attack since 2021. The arrest warrant is supported by numerous eyewitness accounts, recordings and videos, as well as an in-depth analysis of the Syrian army’s command structures.
Arrest warrant also for Assad’s brother
In addition to Assad, his younger brother Maher, who heads an elite unit, and two Syrian generals are now on the international wanted list. They are accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes.
