Meeting with Biden – Xi: “No option to turn away from each other”

Date:

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday called for responsible management of US-China relations. The competition between the two countries must not degenerate into a conflict, he told Chinese head of state Xi Jinping on Wednesday.

Biden’s goal is to improve the tense relations between the two superpowers. The American and Chinese governments have many controversial issues and ideological differences. They compete for global influence and dominance. Xi even spoke of the “world’s most important bilateral relationship.”

Moreover, he said that he and Biden have a great responsibility for the two peoples, for the world and for history. “For two major countries like China and the United States, turning away from each other is not an option. It is unrealistic for one party to transform the other, and conflicts and confrontations have unbearable consequences for both parties. There are common problems, such as a weakening economy after the corona pandemic.

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Meeting
Government officials from Washington and Beijing do not believe that any major rapprochement is possible on the disputes over Taiwan, the South China Sea, the Gaza war, the war in Ukraine, North Korea and human rights issues. This was not the case in previous meetings between the two heads of state.

After their talks, Biden and Xi plan to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in San Francisco. Heads of state and government from 21 countries meet.

Biden and Xi have not seen or spoken in person since the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022.
