Local guests report a racist incident in the center of Innsbruck. Xenophobic slogans were allegedly shouted during a karaoke evening in a bar. Apparently nothing was done by the staff. The bar says it has removed the microphone and distances itself from the racist statements.
How do you spend a Tuesday evening? Singing karaoke, for example. One guest seems to have made it his mission to attract unpleasant attention – and singing his own voice into the microphone apparently wasn’t enough. Because he resorted to racism. According to eyewitness accounts, it happened on Wednesday evening in a bar in the center of Innsbruck. The karaoke evening works in such a way that the songs are played by the waitress at the request of the guests.
The guest probably wanted to shine with a milestone in music history that could not be surpassed in terms of genius: “L’amour toujours” by Gigi D’Agostino. Although the lyrics are about the singer who always wants to be by his loved one’s side, the love song was probably too bland for the karaoke singer. Maybe he doesn’t have a Valentine’s Day date yet.
Bouncer: “It’s freedom of speech”
He insisted on singing ‘Foreigners Out’ in the song. A handful of guests joined. But not all local guests agreed with the shouted hatred and found the xenophobia not exactly suitable for a party. It is not known whether the owner of the restaurant (with a migrant background) would have followed the guest’s wishes and left. However, the message presented greatly disturbed other guests and they turned to the staff. Nothing could be done here, the hope of micro-acceptance was destroyed. A bouncer is said to have said that this falls under freedom of expression.
Two contradictory statements
When asked, the club owner responded: Two men (of Turkish descent) actually shouted “foreigners,” but the employee responded immediately and took the microphone away. “That’s not true,” the witnesses replied – nothing had happened, she let him continue singing: “We went to the waitress and told her to take the microphone away or turn off the music – but she just said that wasn’t possible do something.”
Onay again calls for ‘safer club visits’
Municipal councilor and mayoral candidate Mesut Onay (ALI) has no understanding at all: “It cannot be the case that young people in the night catering industry are exposed to such amateurish behavior by the city management and restaurant operators.” He had already applied in 2018 for ‘Safer Clubbing’, introduced and withdrawn because Mayor Georg Willi (Greens) and the responsible city councilor Christine Oppitz-Plörer (FI) announced that they were working on the issue of “safety and cleanliness in nightlife” For Onay, the two have been inactive in this area for six years, so he will resubmit the motion.
