A new wave of landings puts pressure on Lampedusa. Within 26 hours, 1,202 people reached the Mediterranean island between Sicily and Tunisia.
That night alone, 394 migrants arrived, authorities said Wednesday. Six boats with 35 to 136 people on board were rescued by Italian coast guard patrol ships and a Swedish ship from the EU border agency Frontex.
Significantly more arrivals than last year
On Wednesday, 19 landings were reported on the island involving a total of 903 people. The boats had left from Libya and Tunisia.
Since the beginning of 2023, 146,000 migrants have arrived in southern Italy after a sea journey across the Mediterranean Sea. In the comparable period of 2022, there were 86,000, according to the Ministry of the Interior in Rome.
